Tuesday, September 17, 2002Predicting Earthquakes with Mark and Mary Lou ZobachWhile there is stress in every relationship, few couples have to deal with the kind of tectonic stresses that the Zobacks face. Mark, a professor of geophysics at Stanford, is a principal investigator on the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD), a project to drill four kilometers into the ground near Parkfield, CA to study the rocks and stresses that can lead to earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault. Mary Lou, a research geophysicist with the Seismology Branch of the USGS in Menlo Park, researches the relationship between tectonic stress and earthquake deformation. She was the chief scientist responsible for creating maps that graphically illustrate estimates of earthquake intensity and effects throughout Northern California. She will talk about earthquake hazards in the SF Bay Area, while Mark discusses the current status of earthquake prediction. WHERE: DINNER MENU: SCHEDULE: COST: TO RESERVE SPACE:
