Thursday, October 16, 2008NCSWA Fall Dinner: What Our Next President Needs to Know About PhysicsWho: Rich Muller, author of Physics for Future Presidents: the Science behind the Headlines, and an award-winning physicist with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and UC Berkeley When: October 16, 2008 Where: Caffé Giovanni in Berkeley What if the next President didn’t know anything about physics? Rich Muller, research physicist, author and one of UC Berkley’s most popular lecturers on science, argues that our next president can't afford to be ignorant about the science behind nuclear weapons, energy, space, and global warming. His question for Barack Obama or John McCain is: “How can you lead your country into a clean-energy future if you don't understand solar power or how coal could be converted into gasoline? How can you decide important issues about research funding, arms control treaties, threats from North Korea or Iran, spying and surveillance if you only understand the political issues but not the technical ones?" Muller will tell us what it takes to survive in today's increasingly dangerous world and provide the information that will be essential to the next Commander-in-Chief.
