The UCSF-affiliated J. David Gladstone Institutes, a group of three medical research institutes, just celebrated its 25th anniversary with the dedication of a new 200,000 square-foot research facility housing upwards of 300 scientists and support staff conducting research into the causes of HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease and such neurodegenerative illnesses as Alzheimer's disease and Huntington’s disease. This program provides an opportunity to tour the new $74 million building, the first private biomedical research organization to buy and develop land in the planned biotech corridor surrounding the UCSF Mission Bay campus, and to find out more about the leading research being conducted at Gladstone.
Gladstone President Robert W. Mahley, whose many hats include being an investigator in the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease, kicks off the program with a Gladstone overview, a brief video and a look at the fascinating neurological research being conducted at Gladstone. Renowned HIV/AIDS researcher Warner Greene, director of the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, discusses the most promising developments in the world of HIV therapeutics. Bruce Conklin, an investigator in the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease and head of the Gladstone Embryonic Stem Cell Laboratory, discusses his institute’s research in such areas as atherosclerosis and provides a look at the use of the stem cell lab to advance these studies.
The program is hosted by NCSWA member John Watson, who many of you will recall organized a successful visit to SGI headquarters in Mountain View in 2003. Further details about the Gladstone Institutes are available online.
