March 15, 2003:
Field Trip to SGI Reality Center

You've all heard about scientific visualization, but you've never seen anything like this: a 30-person theatre with a wrap-around 180-degree screen that can display everything from molecular simulation and protein folding for drug discovery to virtual walk-throughs of ancient sites for scientific education purposes. This technology has even been used to analyze such artifacts as Egyptian mummies inside their unopened cases.

John Watson of SGI, the company behind these visualization technologies, warmly invites fellow NCSWA members to visit SGI's Mountain View headquarters on the morning of Saturday, March 15, starting at 9:30 a.m. to experience real-time visualization for yourselves. The venue is a SGI Reality Center facility, where you will see demos in 3D and stereo, the latter with glasses for in-your-face visualizations-far more dramatic than words can describe!

On hand will be SGI Chairman and CEO Bob Bishop, whose distinguished background includes mathematics degrees from the University of Adelaide and NYU. You can learn more about SGI and the sciences and about Reality Center technologies online.

Members are welcome to bring one adult guest each, which means space is limited to 15 members and their guests (possibly more, depending on how many guests sign up). Advance reservations for both parties are necessary.

HOW TO SIGN UP: Contact John Watson at jwatson@sgi.com, (650) 933-1652.
