Thursday, April 1, 2010Dinner with Stephen PalumbiStephen Palumbi is a pioneer in applying molecular techniques to marine ecology. He is perhaps best known for conducting the first DNA analyses to identify whale and dolphin meat for sale in Japanese markets. An astute scientist with broad interests ranging from details of fish species distribution in response to climate change to the ways in which human activities are shaping evolution, Palumbi is one of the leading lights of marine conservation. A storytelling entrepreneur who has brought the beauty and science of the marine world to iPods and smartphones everywhere via his series of three-minute "microdocumentaries," Palumbi will give us a preview of his upcoming book on the social and biological history of Monterey Bay, which he says tells a hopeful story about the exploitation and recovery of the Bay.
