Celebrate Earth Day with NCSWA by volunteering to restore Codornices Creek in Berkeley. We’ll be removing invasive plants and doing other work under the direction of Friends of Five Creeks, an all-volunteer group which mobilizes locals to restore watersheds from North Berkeley to Richmond.

Codornices Creek is home to steelhead/rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and an urban oasis for birds, insects, and other local wildlife. Our efforts will make this critical corridor more ecologically functional.

Friends of Five Creeks leader Susan Schwartz will direct our efforts and provide an interpretive talk as we go. She’ll discuss restoration efforts along the creek, its use by steelhead, plans to complete a trail, and the challenge of working with multiple agencies on stewardship.

After working up an appetite, we’ll stroll to Fieldwork Brewing Company (within walking distance at Sixth St. and Harrison St.), where lunch offerings include tamales, grilled cheese sandwiches, and craft beer.

The Friends will provide tools, gloves, and snacks. NCSWAns should bring a reusable water bottle, wear closed-toed shoes with good traction, and dress to get dirty, layering for changing weather. The work party will go forward if there’s a drizzle, but heavy rain cancels.

We’ll meet at 10th Street and the creek, one block west of San Pablo, one block north of Harrison, two blocks north of Gilman, on the south edge of University Village and the Berkeley/Albany border. Closest Google Map address is 1101 Tenth St., Berkeley.

We’ll do some work between 10th and San Pablo and then head west to work lower on the creek, incorporating an interpretive walk.
